In between photographing dressage and painting commissioned portraits, I’ve been working on a series of still life painting of bright, colorful horse show ribbons and shiny horsey things like bits and trophies. These paintings are all larger than life, hyper-realistic tromp l’oeil. This particular one is of lux ribbons won at a National Championship, complete with swanky fringe….. I placed them on polka dotted fabric just for fun! Scroll through the photos to see the intricate details.

Compared to the rest of the country (Boston, are you still there?!?) our winter has been nothing to complain about. But it’s been a long drought, and if we in the southwest could take some of the east coast’s moisture off its hands, I don’t think many people would mind.
At sunrise, I awoke to sight of March coming in like a lion, with billowing clouds and a rare morning rainbow. Of course the scene made me interrupt my yoga to grab a camera and dash outside! A half hour after I took these shots, the skies opened up, thunder ensued, and some folks got golf ball sized hail.
Between traveling to the Saugerties CDI,
and then a week of hosting a family visit, I’ve had to skip a couple of Paintings Of The Week. I’m making up for it now: Here is my Ode to the End of Summer with three 8×10 paintings.
While watching toddlers learn to blow bubbles in the pool one day, I realized that every available deck chair had been draped with a pool towel, and that it looked incredibly artistic in a kind of Wayne-Thiebaud-meets-David-Hockney kind of way. I was just aching to paint it, but someone asked for another batch of guacamole, or maybe a sippy cup. So once all the house guests had left, and there were no small fingers nearby that would have been trying to get into my oil paints, I recreated the scene on my patio with my favorite striped towels, because I just love painting stripes…. And I thoroughly enjoyed the quiet.
