It’s been a rainy, El Nino winter, but the past two weeks we’ve had some extraordinarily beautiful weather. Not a string of amazing sunny days, but sunny days in between storms. You know, kind of like the rest of the world’s weather.
When it’s like this, on those shimmering days the air seems scrubbed clean. If you climb a hill you can see to the horizon. I’ve taken advantage of this exquisite light to go wildflower hunting. Because there hasn’t been a bloom like this since the last El Nino five years ago.
My travels have taken me to Torrey Pines State Park, on the cliffs above the ocean, to the Santa Rosa Plateau and to the California Poppy Reserve near Lancaster. Oh, and to my own backyard, which though not populated by wildflowers, has been pretty darn colorful this spring.
