We literally blew into Las Vegas on Tuesday in front of gale force winds, which stirred up dust devils in the desert, and made airborne every piece of Vegas trash that you don’t normally want to see. The winds were so strong that the fountains at the Bellagio had to be shut down, but we enjoyed noodling around inside the hotel with fellow photographers Mary Cornelius and Marie Cobb.
Warm up day was more dramatic than usual with the withdrawal of Adelinde Cornelissen’s Parzival, who I’d been looking forward to seeing in person. But there were style point to be earned! Jeanett Haazen and Nartan didn’t disappoint, dressing in matching pale pink polo shirt, saddle pad, wraps and browband — all blinged! And Minna Telde and Don Charly were wearing rich Morrocan brown bridle and boots, a refreshing change from dressage’s standard “black is the new black.” We hear through the grapevine that the FEI will be allowing a whole range of new colors, so I’m hoping that this is the trend for the future!
It was great to see our “homies”: Steffen, Leslie and Jan. Everyone looked great in the warmup, but Kingston really brought the house down with a fabulous piaffe.
The draw party was held at Tabu at the MGM Grand. Yes, of course we quality-checked the martinis. Yes, of course they were fabulous. I’ll say no more.
We’re looking forward to a great day of competition in the Grand Prix today!
