Florida was fun, but it’s flat, and it was great to get home to my house on the hill. One of my favorite hikes starts just down the street, and it climbs up the side of Double Peak. Now, this is not a gentle stroll: it’s a 500 foot elevation gain to the lower of the two Peaks, and the trail, although paved or dg, has a grade in parts of 20%.
But it’s worth the climb, not only for flat out, bun-burning aerobic ascent, but because of the views: the ocean comes into sight about halfway up, and just about all of San Diego county is visible from the very top. And this week, for a further treat, the California Lilac are in bloom, and the flanks of the mountain have a distinct lavender tint, thanks to this year’s bountiful winter rains.
These were taken with my Canon Elph: I just haven’t wanted to hike up the hill with my big girl camera. The Elph I can point and shoot with one hand while holding Tinto’s leash in the other!
