Our “morning group”, the ladies of the Vision 18 Collective, has been talking about style recently. What IS style, how do you find you own artistic style. People tell me that they can recognize my photos and my paintings immediately, but how? I can recognize my own photos if I see them in a magazine or on a website, but is it a case of recognizing a background or location? Or is it normal not to see our own style, just like we don’t see of ourselves that we laugh in a certain way or gesture just so.
I think that style is the repeating patterns that show up in our work and our life. Sometimes those patterns are obvious (an artist who places a big red dot in every painting) and sometimes they’re subtle (the juxtaposition of a particular blue with a particular pale pink, somewhere in every painting).
Can you find a style for yourself when you are looking for it? Or can you only glimpse it out of the corner of your eye? Is it like a vision quest, you have to put yourself in a position of availability, and become hungry enough that it finds you? Is it something that you can choose, or does it select you, like a totem would choose you?
